Web clips from TDCJ Sunset hearing

The group Texas IMPACT put snippets of video on their website of some of the reform-minded testimony at this week's Sunset Commission hearing focused on the Department of Criminal Justice, (discussed on Grits here) for those who didn't get to attend.

Go here to see the full, unexpurgated hours-long June 5 hearing, for those who'd like to watch the whole thing online.

I'm corresponding with several inmates in different units and have asked them all if they were asked to submit grievances with recommendations for the Sunset Commission. NONE of them even heard of such a thing....in other words, the request for input to the Sunset Commission by inmates didn't happen. Do we know for sure the inmate input was valid? Was this one more ruse by TDCJ? I'm just sayin'......

I am part of TIFA (Texas Inmates Families Association) and can personally vouch for inmate input as I was part of the process of gathering and tabulating this input for TIFA that was submitted for the Sunset Commission Review hearings. Yuu must remember that we have over 150,000 inmates in Texas and it is not possible to get input from very single inmate, so obviously what was submitted was a cross-section. Many were reluctant to participate for fear of retaliation.
