John Bradley seeks state job prosecuting prison inmates

There has been much speculation since his primary loss where Williamson County District Attorney John Bradley might land once he leaves office, and the Texas Tribune confirms widespread rumors that he's one of three finalists "to lead the state's Special Prosecution Unit, which prosecutes crimes committed in state prisons and juvenile detention facilities and is in charge of civil commitments of sexual predators."

Grits won't say "good luck" because I'm not sure I want him to get the gig. Though it might be interesting to see John Bradley in a job which calls on him to treat convicted felons with the deference prosecutors normally afford victims, one imagines the other candidates likely offer less politicized options. OTOH, there are places he could land where he could do far more damage, just in case his road to Damascus conversion doesn't stick. Heck, I'd half-feared Gov. Perry would name him head of his Criminal Justice Division. So I've got mixed feelings about this prospect, though I'm sure Grits readers have strong opinions on the subject.

  1. He needs to be banned from government service, lose his law license and if he cannot yet retire he can be a stocker at Walmart...can let him work the door. He might accuse innocent people of shoplifting. This man should be treated like the scum he is along with the original prosecutor. NC has some ways to hold prosecutors accountable for their bad acts. We need to have our legislature adopt some of their protections. Mike Nifong is not the only prosecutor worthy of disbarment and prison. There should never be a criminal prosecution by ambush or withholding of evidence exculpatory or otherwise. If the state cannot win with all the cards face up they should not win. Too much chance of convicting an innocent or in a victimless crime too much chance of letting law enforcement get away with civil rights violations to gather evidence illegally.

  3. Bradley is ruthless and should not be trusted to oversee the prosecution of criminal cases particularly those cases within the Texas Youth Commission. Bradley has proven that he is more concerned with convictions than he is with justice.

Here is a link to the quarterly reports of cases within TJJD being handled by the Special Prosecution Unit.

Keep Bradley away from our youth.

  4. And, for good measure, maybe we should all jump on a complaint form on the Governor's website. Surely his consideration is just some sort of a courtesy. He needs to go to another state where he is not so notorious. And he certainly does not need to be on the prosecutor side of the law.

  5. Although there is the possiblity that even the devil would not want him, just send Bradley to hell!!

  6. I find the fact that he is even being considered as a finalist to be disturbing. I suspect this is his reward from Perry for attempting to cover up the Willingham case on the Forensice Science Commissission.

  7. Just as disturbing is the fact he applied for the position. It appears he still wants to be a "predator". If he'd had a true and lasting conversion, wouldn't he want to protect defendants from predators like he once considered himself to be? Has he had yet another conversion? Of course he has plenty of experience, but surely ethics and character still count for something in the job market.

  8. All defendants deserve a prosecutor that will serve justice. Those already incarcerated in the TDCJ deserve a honest prosecutor as much as anyone else.

  13. This individual seems to be determined to retain a slot at the public trough (which we refill).Isn't there a mechanism by which we can force him to forage in the woods like the rest of us? Or is he likely to starve if left to his own skills.

  14. My name is Kerry Max Cook. I spent 22 years on Texas because row because of prosecutors like John Bradley. He has no business working for the State, the County, the prison system - - or anybody for that matter. He should not even had a license to practice law at all to even apply for a State prosecutor position. John Bradly should be IN the prison system he is applying to work OUTSIDE of. John Bradley, like Smith County Judge Jack Skeen, A.D. Clark, III and David Dobbs ought to be inmates cleaning toilets in prison for what they have done.

  15. Texas is the laughing stock of the nation, the world. I support fair, if fair in Texas is a little rough, OK. You better get the FAIR RIGHT! When conservative, "fair", tough on crime breeds these predators, Bradley, Anderson, Skeen, it goes beyond the rudimentary demands of justice. Neither Kerry Max Cook nor Michael Morton were given a fair trial and we paddy whack around with these crooks? Disturbing is way too weak of a word. As another commenter alluded to, imagine the fallout to workaday crimes. By any slight percent or twisted math, the consequences are horrific and dwarfs anything Halloween. Trick or treat in Texas? No Thanks!

Texans and Texas have a responsibility to restore it to the great place it was and can be.

  18. He cannot be trusted with the delivering justice. He probably cant even find the word in the dictionary. He is an evil person. The people of williamson county do not want him. What makes tricky ricky think that we the tax paying citizens of TX want him either. It is time for him to be on his own. Who can we write, call, email to voice our opposition.

  19. Doubtful Bradley will get it. Reporters needs to do their homework. The bets are on Mark Edwards who currently works for that office and was DA in Sweetwater for several years. Unlike Bradley, he is non-controversial, well liked, just as experienced as Bradley and actually has ethics and a sense of fairness and justice.

  20. Hey Mr. Cook, If time permits. please consider creating a Petition over at change.org under "Criminal" in an effort to prevent this fiasco. *With an address to mail in signatures we collect on the streets.

Perry's cherry on top must be drop kicked to the friggin curb. Let us know when we can get to work gathering signatures. Thanks.

  21. John Bradley should not be allowed to hold any position where he is judging others. He is a liar and is ruthless to taxpaying citizens weather they have committed a crime or not. Believe it or not all US citizens should be treated fairly and with justice; Mr. Bradley cannot do this because he is a power hungry and ruthless politician that seeks positions of power over others for his own pleasure. Please do not allow him to hold a position that divvies out punishments to anyone or gives him the power to alter anyone’s life. Shame on you for even considering such a vile and disrespectful position against the people of Texas.

  22. John Bradley should not only be ineligible for this job, but he should be disbarred and criminally prosecuted for obstruction of justice. I find his fall from grace to be well-deserved and spectacular!

  23. Interestingly enough, I just saw a negative piece about him on one of Lisa Ling's shows a few weeks ago. Seems he's been quite generous with his prosecutorial misconduct. It is ironic that words like "predator" are being used to describe him as he has no doubt used that word to pursue prosecution of innocent citizens.
