I prefer that to the converse, which occurs more frequently.Gritsforbreakfasthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10152152869466958902noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8597101.post-79738942533151550472008-04-22T03:52:00.000-05:002008-04-22T03:52:00.000-05:00TDCJ hired 12 new discharge clerks (temp). Think they are about to fix some of these stats by releasing a bunch of inmates?V2Saturnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11059801473234669611noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8597101.post-77849159682574963852008-04-21T16:10:00.000-05:002008-04-21T16:10:00.000-05:00Well - not only is there a shortage at TDCJ, short...Well - not only is there a shortage at TDCJ, shortages also exist at most county jails, TYC, county juvenile detention centers, non-profit residential programs, etc. Just how much salary will it take to fill the thousands of positions that exist statewide? If salaries were raised to $35K beginning, would the positions fill? We're raised our entry (no experience) from about $22K to $26K plus full benefits and those who have been here also got raises of $2K to $3K which got them in the $32 - $33 range, depending how long they've been with us. We continue to turn over at the rate of 25 to 30% yearly on these "guard" jobs.

Biggest problem, IMO, is that it is pretty shitty work. In all my years in this bidness (30 plus), when the state economy is good and booming, we have this problem. When the economy tanks, we have plenty of applicants. Been that way forever and probably isn't about to change.

Grits, you're gonna get your way and depopulate all these locksups but not for all the reasons you espouse. (smiley face).

PlatoAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
