Damnit, somehow I'd missed that the bill allowing DPS to gather biometric facial recognition data from Texas drivers license applicants is up Wednesday afternoon in the House Defense Affairs Committee, which recommended the idea in their interim report. I guess I know how I'll be spending my day tomorrow. See here for prior Grits coverage.
In 2003, the Texas House of Representatives voted down the bill with the largest margin of any defeated bill in the 78th session, in a dramatic 111-26 vote. By contrast, the Senate has been more receptive to Big Brother technologies. If the bill passes in the House, it would likely see smooth sailing after that.
