Will Dems put up 2010 CCA candidates?

Kirsten Gray of the Texas Democratic Party reminds me that "The candidate filing period starts this Thursday, Dec. 3rd and ends Jan. 4th, 2010," which makes me wonder if any Democrats besides Keith Hampton will sign up to run for the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals? I'd like to see somebody sign up to run against Judge Meyers as well. Texas CCA candidates tend to draw tens of thousands more votes than other Democratic statewide candidates.

  1. I'd expect the dems to put someone up for every bench in the state. After all, they've made startling gains in some very populous counties over the last two election cycles.

  2. If elected, Keith Hampton will be the only judge who has handled death penalty cases in all stages of litigation – from accusation, trial, appeal and all post-conviction proceedings, including appearing before the Supreme Court of the United States.

Growing up in Texas, a life-long Democrat, Keith Hampton began his career at age 17, as the youngest precinct chairperson for the Texas Democratic Party.

For the last twenty years, Keith has defended the Texas Constitution and the Constitution of the United States in hundreds of cases. As an active member of the criminal defense bar, a Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation, and a member of the Pro Bono College of the State Bar of Texas, Keith has tirelessly worked for fairness, integrity and justice for all Texans.

His has had a celebrated career.

  4. Maybe, John Bradley will run? Oh, I forgot - he's not a Democrat, he's a "transparent."

  5. John Bradley ran for the CCA and lost in '96, actually.

  6. Keith Hampton is a Grits liberal who would bring an anti-law enforcement agenda to the court. He is openly hostile to strict application of the law and fudges on facts to say what he wants to say. Even among defense attorneys, he has a bad reputation for truthfulness.

  7. Keith would probably find it humorous bordering on insulting to be labeled a "Grits liberal." He and I have butted heads before, including quite a bit during the last session, and we tend to have very different priorities.

  8. The Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association awarded Keith Hampton their President's Award for seven years straight. How can you say he has a bad reputation among defense attorneys?

I suppose it would be too much to ask for any facts of any type to back up this ridiculous allegation? The guy is a regular lecturer at TCDLA functions and the Advanced Criminal Law Course offered by the State Bar of Texas, which represents both sides.

Why is it that there is always a group of people that believe the accused are automatically guilty, never entitled to a defense of any type, and those who would defend them obviously lie, cheat, and steal and have no ethics of any kind? Read the papers, there are more prosecutors with ethical problems than defense lawyers, and giving someone a fair trial is not an attack on our system of liberty.

  11. Bill White our next governor?

Bill White is leaving Houston with huge deficits and debt, and his city may be bankrupt. Bill White is leaving Houston with a rising crime rate that he tried to hide. Bill White's Houston is a sanctuary city.
