Harris County hires new interim probation director
In the wake of the resignation of the Harris County adult probation director in the wake of a drug testing scandal, a new interim director has been hired. The Houston Chronicle has a brief profile.
Helen Harberts is a good person. She is a big advocate of drug courts and does training all over the country. She is capable of getting this agency back on the right track.
Hey 11:20AM, you need to become educated regarding CSCDs. The County Commissioners have nothing to do with the hiring of a Probation Director. This decision will be made by the Judicial Board. While the job may be high paying in some people's eyes, it is anything but cush.
Prosecutor -> Probation Administrator -> Prosecutor now back to Probation Administrator
Wonder where Harberts stands regarding revoking technical violators to prison? It would be great if she could convince other prosecutors to "free their minds" from a hard-line tough on crime stance.
Interesting indeed. Harberts is not from Texas. Her ideas about probation come from California. She is an ex-prosecutor. She is a smart lady, but lets see her try and make her cute Power Points she parades around at Specialty Court Trainings fit into one of the largest systems in the country. Time will tell. Who knows, maybe she is the best thing to ever happen to Harris County. Other than ZZ Top, of course.

ReplyDeleteYou don't know how deals work in Harris County. It might not be their decision, but it's only a phone call away.

Maybe she will authorize the PO's to use their powers of arrest under the CCP.
ReplyDeleteIf she is smart and progressive, she will not fit in in Harris County...or anywhere else in Texas....except maybe Austin. It won't last long.
