TYC football team receives spirited welcome
Occasionally, following this nationally publicized example, schools on the schedules of TYC's fooball teams have taken to welcoming the visiting squad with their own cheering section, food after the game, etc.. Here's a story of a private Austin school which showed the Giddings State School Indians a good time before and after a thorough on-the-field trouncing. With the emphasis on group prayer and affirming the humanity of offenders, plus the fact that some of the schools putting on these welcomes, like this one, are religious academies, such events almost have the feel of prison ministry work. I'm glad to see it.
What these schools are doing is just awesome. When Grapevine Faith did this year before last it was unheard of. These kids are already stigmatized due to the situation they’re in coupled with the dehumanizing culture of our 120 year old agency of state sponsored child abuse. It does give them a taste of being a teenager on a Friday night in Texas.
ReplyDeleteScott, I would think that the same kindness would be shown to these state boys if they went to play a Jewish school or a Muslim school.
Here is a question for you correctionally minded folks, why does a ministry have to be religious based? Cant one humanbeing benefit from the help of another without the fear of taking a Jesus enema? People can benefit from human contact but we ask them to pretend to be Christian to obtain the extra benefits that come from Christian prison ministry. Is there a prison ministry without the religiosity?

I know this might melt your brain Sheldon but... mine is a state- sponsored-Jesus influenced-but enema free ministry every day i go to work in TYC trying to help youth and serve the state to the best of my ability...and i know i am not the only one...and you dare not tell me that i am supporting child abuse.
ReplyDeleteGrits, it was actually a nuanced trouncing as the Regents did not score until near the end of the second quarter.
yes and the Indians only had like 15 players.
ReplyDeleteSheldon how many other groups outside of prison ministry have you seen come into the system on a long term basis. If you don't care for Jesus then why attend Christian sponsored events. As a retired Chaplain I never saw a Christian event in TYC that was mandatory for the youth to attend. It appears Sheldon you wanted whatever was to be had from the Christians in a non-Christian mode of delivery. If it were not for the Christians there would be very little outside contact for the TYC youth. You might consider the fact the Christian/Religious people were the only ones who showed up to visit you in prison. Kind of reminds me of what Jesus had to say in Matthew 25.
ReplyDeleteYour comment about Jewish and Muslim schools might be correct but I doubt it. I tried on numerous occasions to obtain counsel for Muslims but the Muslim leaders refused. Under their form of religious law criminals are usually executed or have body parts chopped off. I never had a request by a Jewish inmate so I have no experience in that area.
Sheldon your remark about TYC system of child abuse paints every past and present employee as a child abuser which is totally untrue. I saw many good people trying to help young people in TYC have a better life.
Were there bad people working in TYC; without a doubt but they were a minority. During the last few years there was a click of high ranking officials who were the ones that mistreated youth emotionally and sexually. The vast majority of TYC employees were just as abused as the youth by the evil people who were usually in power. The vast majority of them will go unpunished for that is the way politics go in Texas. The powerful will always pray on the weak Sheldon. It is not right but it is a fact of life.
Sheldon since you have been out for several years how many times have you be back to work with the youth? What kind of positive programming have you delivered?
WE also should be a part of it because football team is proud of our country.

ReplyDeleteI agree. Where I serve, take away the 'religious' folk, and there will be only a handful left.
Sheldon - I am shocked you feel this way.
TYC teams have also received warm welcomes from non religious schools as well. I know that the Mart facility plays the Mart team often and the Mart Panther fans welcome them in the same way. I am glad Grits finally had a positive story about TYC. Too bad Sheldon had to go ruin a good moment with his negative remarks about state sponsored child abuse. I have been with TYC for 7 years and even through the turmoil I am still proud to work here and proud of the job I do for these boys.
ReplyDeleteOh come on people, I despise tyc, what else am I going to say. I actually think it was better in the Gatesville days than today because I have been back in some of the facilities. At least that culture didn’t molest or allow the molestation of the kids. Well there was that one colored protestant Chaplin who had a thing for some of the colored boys down at sycamore school but that was very isolated. I’m pretty scholarly when it comes to the Bible and have no issue with any form of religious expression, even the ones who profess a “believe the way I do our I will kill you” theology. And if you have at least worked a week in tyc then you know the best way out of the dorm, to do whatever, is to attend chaplaincy events. And they are numerous.
ReplyDeleteI know tyc doesn’t get a lot of kids from other religions so the Christian ministries are going to be more abundant. Muslims don’t put up with the shenanigans that would get one of theirs placed in tyc and Jews just aren’t foolish enough to fall for the cop bs to let one of our kids get caught up in a place like tyc.
Perhaps the defensive nature of the tyc crime school culture causes you people to not understand my question.
Is there other ministries that are not religious in nature that are allowed into tyc? From you peoples defensive commits it’s safe to assume that a child predator who is not employed by tyc can get to the kids if they come in on the coat tails of a Christian ministry!?

Wow! I haven't heard (or read) the term "colored boys" in some time.
ReplyDeleteI don't think anyone is really knocking down the door Sheldon.
ReplyDeleteWhich facilities have you been in?
I also think you are just as biased as those you claim to be abusers.
Sheldon: There are times and places for comments. This isn't the thread to rail against "child abusers" - there are other threads where you can do that
ReplyDeleteSheldon's a thug, so give him a hug. It's what happens here people. The Right call it hell and out-of-bounds, while the left and others call it GFB.org.
ReplyDeleteI’ve been a Pastor for over 40 years and doing prison ministry for over 30 years. Sheldon has a point and I think it’s being missed. We need a non religious way to reach people in prison. Most just want out of their cells for some human interaction. Start something Sheldon, you have a lot to offer because you have been there and you made it. I can see why the captors are jealous because it’s thought that if you have been locked up you are scum. They can’t stand to see your success. But you really shouldn’t rub it in so hard as Mr. Katamari seems to point out. I can appreciate the Jesus enema and so can anyone who has ever sat on a plain with someone who has an evangelical heart. Stay true Sheldon your voice needs to be heard. I would love to hear your testimony one day. Good luck Sheldon with your ministry
ReplyDeleteTYC has a mentor program for individuals who want to establish supportive relationships for youth. There are many who come in on an individual basis and try to support the youth.
ReplyDeleteI think it is awesome what Regents did and wish more people would have the same approach to people less fortunate than themselves.
ReplyDeleteColored comes from tyc’s count system C=Colored, L=Latino, and W=White. I’ve always used the word Schvatza to avoid using a politically incorrect term of the day. It’s my native language and my inalienable right to use it. That line once saved my ass with HR back in the early 90’s, lmao. I was placed on a predominantly colored school shortly after Gatesville reluctantly desegregated. You could get into a racially motivated fight just asking the clothes room boy for some ‘black’ shoe polish. The tyc morons thought they were doing me a disservice but I liked the Schvatza’s, they understood tribal law, and were easy to manage. Those poor dumb tyc diagnosticians put me in a situation where I could continue honing my business skills. You see, I was sent to Gatesville because I organized the Schvatza’s at my DISD school and sold protection insurance to the whitey’s. I don’t think those rednecks in Gatesville appreciated my entrepreneurial skills I brought to the table. It was great because most of the staff at the school were Schvatza’s, because the white staff couldn’t work with the ‘colored boys’ as they were referred to. I was able to establish control quickly and payroll was cheap. My first year there was like a vacation minus the girls. That was cool because we didn’t have those stupid code 21 violations and you would be surprised what a schvatza would do for an explicit picture of a white girl. I know this may not be politically correct but that’s how it was. I think it’s a shame how whitey treats the Schvatza’s but what I find more disturbing is how Schvatza’s treat each other. I’m ashamed at how I profited by this cultural truism and hope to make it right one day.
ReplyDeleteThanks Pastor, I’m working on it. I’ve been through the tyc volunteer training but I think being an alumni is causing issue. Someone at tyc told me it was because of felony convictions but I don’t have any. Hell, I vote, serve on juries, I even served on a Grand jury a while back. The advise I have for tyc kids may keep them out of the system, but tyc doesn’t want them to hear it from me. It’s the mentality of the culture, and it’s the culture that the kid has to break free from. And that is a tyc no-no. My GED with my dumb ass case workers inscription, “if he runs again tear this up” hangs next to my UT BSEE, and soon my SMU MBA. It’s a reminder of how stupid people like this case worker can continue to enslave people. A reminder of Texas state sponsored child abuse and its residual effects on our society’s marginalized kids.

thug, lol, thats cute, I'll have to tell my kids that.
Its probably your comments on here that is getting you in trouble. TYC monitors this.
ReplyDeleteI think Sheldon works at Central Office. That case number is to low for that kid to be alive. Co is always looking for way to stir up trouble and he knows about TYC.
ReplyDeleteSheldon - are you in the DWF area?
ReplyDeleteSunset Commission recommends TYC stay operational for 6 more years.
ReplyDeleteSheldon's a myth. It's a pen name, nome de guerre, nom de plum, tag name, rag name, fag name, fake/bunk name, whatever name. He just likes to stir the pot and he's good at it. He's oviously pretty smart and knows some history, but he's not what he wants everyone to think he is.
