Don't look now, the government is watching ... do you feel safer?

According to Men's Health magazine, four of the 15 American cities under the most government surveillance are in Texas:
  • Houston (2)
  • Dallas (6)
  • Austin (7)
  • Corpus Christi (13)
  • El Paso (26)
You might expect more of El Paso would be under surveillance more than other cities because of military and border security installations and concern over feuding drug cartels in Juarez, but they're relatively far down the list. As per the question in the headline, to folks in Houston, Dallas, Austin and Corpus: Does so much surveillance make you feel a) more safe, b) less safe, or just c) like the government wasted your tax dollars on something pointless? Tell us in the comments, or feel free to suggest your own "d."

Here's the description of the methodology behind the rankings: "To figure out where it's always 1984, we gathered intelligence on the presence of all kinds of cameras: traffic, red light, and police surveillance (TrafficLand.com, Photo Enforced.com, and local police and state transportation departments). We then checked in with the Administrative Office of the United States Courts to calculate rates of authorized government wiretaps."

  1. And the common denominator among all 4 of those Texas cities? They are governed by Democrats. Coincidence?

  2. I'm not sure which frightens me more--the creepiness of government surveillance, or the arousal of my long-dormant Libertarian tendencies!

  3. If you don't give them the money, they can't spend it unwisely.

  4. I love what FleaStiff said, but with a twist. They (government entities - especially the cities) have already spent the money! They want us to keep paying. It's all about fines and fees.

  5. You can't count red light cameras as bad. Especially if you've ever been hit by someone who was running a red light. That happened to me once and my wife once. And, both times the red light runner claimed they had a green light and got no ticket. If there had been a camera, they would have gotten tickets.

Well, ONE of you would have. ;)

  7. I'm beginning to think based on an accumulation of news stories of spying on America that this is where the "psychics" came from.....

  8. Bob, It all depends on who you are related to in Texas and they have proven that these red light camera's aren't what they are supposed to be. Why? They haven't been approved by the Family....
