Shooting John Whitmire: A compendium of motives

Hearing news that someone fired at least four shots into Senate Criminal Justice Committee Chairman John Whitmire's Houston offices, Grits couldn't help wonder why anyone would want to shoot the Houston Democrat, who's served that district with distinction for four decades. Here are the top ten reasons I could envision.
  1. State Sen. John Whitmire
A witness he dressed down at a committee hearing wants payback.
  2. Democrats in Houston "waiting their turn" to run for his seat are turning grey and having grandkids, getting impatient.
  3. If the Lt. Governor won't give Joan Huffman chairmanship of the Senate Criminal Justice Committee, she'll just have to find another way.
  4. House members proposing new crimes and "enhancements" (increased penalties) are sick of passing bills in the House that the chairman pocket vetoes in the Senate.
  5. Someone blames him for reforms in the aughts that slightly reduced the size of Texas' prison system.
  6. Someone blames him for reforms in the '90s that roughly tripled the size of Texas' prison system.
  7. Critics of high state-jail recidivism rates taking their complaints to the next level.
  8. Someone just couldn't listen to that story about him being robbed in his garage in the early '90s one more time.
  9. An inability to realize that Bald Lives Matter.
  10. Donald Trump decided to test his theory that he could shoot someone and still be elected, but his aim was as off as his skin tone. It's difficult when your index finger will barely reach the trigger.

A WEEKLY dose! So, like a slow-release snark patch instead of a daily pill. Excellent. :)

Grits, you forgot No. 11, or No. 3A, depending on how you slice things: Maybe Danny Boy was trying to give Huffman the helping hand?

To the civil commitment critic Good luck beating Whitmire in an election. I'm sure with him gone, the 2/3 of the Legislature filled with conservative Republicans will then immediately give you exactly what you want.

Oh Anon 6:27 and 6:39. Who will vote? The 18% of the eligible electorate who show up and don't actually vote based on knowing about the race? I've got oceanfront property in Abilene if you're interested.
