Frances Newton Gets 120-Day Reprieve!
I just received word from Steve Hall that Governor Perry has granted Death-Row inmate Frances Newton a 120-day reprieve. Thank heavens. The Fifth Circuit declined to help Newton, whose incompetent trial counsel never investigated her innocence claims; she was scheduled to be executed tonight.
UPDATE: Two people emailed to ask, "What now?" Well, now her lawyers must do their job. The purpose of the reprieve was to give time for ballistics tests to be run that may prove Newton is innocent, as she has always claimed. Thanks to everybody who took NCADP's action alerts -- it bought Frances Newton one, final chance for justice.
