Why do the innocent confess to crimes?

Must be some sort of a syndrome or nobody in his right mind would go to jail for a crime he didn't commit. There has to be a logical reason as to why these innocent people confess to the crimes.

Unrelenting pressure from the cops, weak-minded or mentally addled, even mentally ill individuals, and often a desire for fame (or infamy) seem to be the common threads in most cases you hear about.
