Feds want traffic ticket data? Why?

Vince Leibowitz at Burnt Orange Report ponders the meaning of an AP report that five Texas Gulf Coast counties will participate in a first-ever pilot program where the federal government collects data gathered by police officers on all traffic tickets. Obviously, those homeland security guys don't have enough haystacks yet in which to look for needles. Vince asks all the right questions in his fine post.

Hey, thanks for making reference to my post! I appreciate it. I wasn't sure that many people got what I was tyring to say, but I'm glad you did. I read your blog on a regular basis.

BTW, you are right on about the "regional" drug task forces.

As a former journalist, I could tell you some interesting stories about some of their "cases," as well as some by the "federalized" officers who often work with small town police departments. Soooo many lawsuits waiting to happen because of civil rights violations.

Keep up the good work.

Thanks, Vince. You did a good job on the traffic tickets piece and I hope you follow up on it. The Big Brother beat in this state offers a lot of opportunities, don't it? Best,
