Austin police are lousy shoppers

Said the Austin Statesman's John Kelso over the weekend, proving once again that even a blind squirrel can occasionally find a journalistic nut. I agree with Kelso when he writes:
I don't mean to sound like a corruption expert, but this case doesn't strike me as criminal. Look at the yuppie junk the cops frittered away the money on: higher learning, jogging shoes and coffee mugs. You call that criminal? I call it accessorizing.
OTOH, by making this a criminal inquiry, if no one is prosecuted then information about the investigation becomes a closed record, which is probably why APD chose to treat it as a potential crime. Someday, the Texas Legislature MUST close this gaping loophole in the public information act.
