Dallas: 6.6% property tax hike caused by jail costs
Reports the Dallas Morning News today.
MORE: And did I mention the DA as well as the Sheriff both want a bigger budget? And the police department wants 250 more officers? All this for the city with the highest crime rate in America, though they're trying to jiggle the numbers to fix that.
Bottom line, if you don't like higher taxes, right now booming increases in criminal justice spending statewide are driving tax hikes at the local level, particularly in larger cities like Dallas, but smaller ones, too.
I think it's about time Dallas officials gave the public an update on what they're doing to fix the jail's long-term problems, now that they've said what it will cost.
